Twisted

O twisted spire of Chesterfield
How did you come to be?
Legend speaks of a virgin bride
The first the spire did see
It leaned to take a closer look
And should there be one more
The spire shall think it commonplace
And straighten as before.
O twisted spire of Chesterfield
There is another tale
It speaks of the Blacksmithy lad
Who turned the Devil pale
The lad from yonder Bolsover
The Devil he tried to shoe
Drove the nail thro' old Nick’s foot
And caused a great to do
The Devil howled and raged with pain
And shot into the air
He whipped the spire with his great tail
And it twisted in despair.
Or was it bad workmanship
That made the spire twist?
And Chesterfield became famous
When the Journeymen got pissed!
