What little knew they of god, as on they marched.
For death or glory, they felt well equipped.
Yet heat of battle, roundly found them parched;
the cup of life still full and barely sipped.
It was then creations’ king was brought to fore,
alliance questioned; affirmation sought,
amongst the screams and bloody spattered gore,
that on the side of righteousness they fought.
And when the book of fate did so decree,
that their short story must [untimely] cease
I pray that in the midst of deaths’ debris,
that heralds led them to eternal peace.
The past remains unchanged and so it must;
it’s the future, for their sake, we keep in trust.

This is brilliant Chris! I'm studying Wilfred Owen at the moment and this poem is definitely a tribute to the war poets ;)

threeleafshamrock, you are a very good writer. Your poem highlights the love and sacrifice offered up for others. I am half Irish and half French. Mom is a Norris, from northern Ontario. Cheers, Richard LP

TLS, I'm from Rouyn-Noranda in northern Quebec, way up north, 350 miles NW of Montreal. It's mining country. Throughout Quebec, there are many Irish married to French Canadians. Also, many children came from England prior to and during the war, especially the Battle of Britain to protect them from German bombings. My dad was seconded from Canada's Armed Forces to work with British Bomber Command, for two years during that battle. Many of the bomber pilots were Canadian. He was part of the team that planned the retaliation against German cities. Cheers, from Truro. RLP

In our times they never wrote and we never knew where they were, I remeber gas masks bit and siren like a police siren horrible.blackout blinds as alittle girl and under the bed or neighbours air raid shelter. Doodle bug. I was about 6. Pray peace and all stop fighting aye.yhey say children eat to much! in ou times never had enough to go round? always borrowed bowl sugar, 1/- for slot tv. eggs luxury.
