THE GHOST OF THE BETRAYED

She comes each night unto my bed
An ethereal shade,
Once my lover, long years dead
The girl whom I betrayed.
She fell straightway beneath my spell
She gave to me her heart,
I pledged my love to her as well
Then ripped that love apart.
I tricked her with each honeyed word
With lies I won her trust,
Every promise that she heard
Was made to serve my lust.
I looked into her faithful eyes
And said she owned my soul,
I spoke of love that never dies
As her maidenhood I stole.

A day or two thereafter
I said our love was dead,
I answered her with laughter
When she said "we were to wed".
I told her, now I'd had my way,
I'd cut her from my life,
As she left I heard her say
"You'll never take a wife".

I gave it scant attention
My sleep at night was sound,
Then someone made mention
Of a woman lately drowned.
That night as I was lying
Her ghost to my bed stole,
She spoke of love undying
Of how she owns my soul.
Ever since it's been the same
Her spirit haunts my room,
I've no one but myself to blame
I brokered my own doom.
She comes each night unto my bed
An ethereal shade,
Once my lover, long years dead
The girl whom I betrayed.
