We’re not secret men
not anymore, not these days.
We don’t hide in shadows
plotting the fall of kings
nor do we wait in dark alleys
to exchange letters
with other men’s wives
for other women’s husbands.
We flip open the lid,
power up the screen
and suddenly the world
knows everything about us,
all the nitty-gritty details
discussed, dissected and shared.
Before we realise, we’re not sure
who we are anymore.
Our secrets used to define us;
these days we seem resolute
on making everyone believe
we have nothing to hide.
I would like to have something
to share with no one else,
something to take to my grave
and leave others wondering about.
