Tony
kindly suggested
My dearest belated pop
was a Navy man
Sailor hat
and bell bottom trousers to match
A tot of rum given in those days
when on leave
encouraged him to go along the pub
Such a skilled Dad to all of eight
A Musician pianists violinists
accordion to
I would have given
my right arm
to do
The poor dog would open
it's mouth and howl to
A Painter and Decorator
Sign writer esq;
I loved to watch
him do the squirls
Rosette's on the ceiling
I would say
"That is quaint
why not try a Saint"
Now one tries
a potato masher
pretty
and a lot quicker
If he did a job for someone
Always a dust sheet be put down
But for us of eight
at home
Only Stand on a chair
and just smack!
and whack it on
He would line us up
down the garden we'd go
helping dig his potatoes
And pull the Curly Kale
Cabbages in rows
and orange carrots
that glowed
Oh!
His beautiful Sweet Peas
That tapered majestically
towards the blue skies
attracted the golden honey bees
Even the washing when he helped!
put on the line
No pegs on
Who would clean the rabbit hutch
Don't forget the
Washing up
Shell the peas take out the bad
If a lunch he prepared
the cabbage not clean
He would have said
"Swollow it down
it all goes the same way"
A bit of a bloody fool
Blow the smoke
into circles of the room
Even the statues
with their open mouths
We all amazed
and laughed
No wonder after a glass
of his home made Dandelion wine
We all seemed to lost our minds
and he'd play the
spoons on his knees
He could make a model
of his
Air craft carrier
he was on
from the war
and masts and a flag
as he sat
and smoked his fags
A lovely one
Of St Pauls
with windows
Made of gold
and silver
toffee wrappers
A wooden toy of
a Monkey on a stick
Squeeze it!
it would jump
over
the top bar
One day he came unstuck!
made a fish tank
Out of a metal
milk crate
Filled all in cement
tipped all water in
Oh! no
all water flooded out all over
the floor
Not quite
So clever after all
Could cut four boy's
hair put a pudding basin round
on their heads
Mend shoes
like youv'e
never seen
Test the brakes
on all our 2nd hand bikes
say
"Not you
it's the other
silly sods
On the road"
A farting,
whoopsie cushion
He would sit on
blame us,
as he moved
or the poor dog
Tie a piece of cotton
to a letter box
Open the door
He would hide behind the wall
Being psychic
that came from his mum
Then Sundays the golden rule
All of to Sunday school
sometimes not ready
what !
was the point going
Kneel and praise god
after all been rowing
He just know
two sons coming on leave
and bring friend's
Make a great cook
Cheese on toast
With touch Oxo
broken up in
They would all arrive
but put them up on the floor
and give to all
Those were happy days then
but most of all
What!
ever you have ever
or skills to
Do try and teach
others to
Such a chaotic family
You know
No money and clothes
We all jossled to-gether
In all life's woes
Mum left after 30 odd years
Ran off someone then
after rows and tears
Polio hit the family
three of us in all
I was under weight
Had to go to
Camp school
did it bring them
more to-gether
Not on your nelly!
He turned to
Chasers!
Whiskey and Barley Wine
Watch out if a full moon
His tempers
seemed to change his moods
THE SANDS OF TIME
Were running out
Like an egg timer
Sifting through!
I was always fascinated
by watching it to
Dearest pop given 6 months
to live
"Hope I haven't got the big C"
he would say
as his watch
slid up the arm
As eventually worked in a
Nursing home
and had seen it all
I would go over by taxi
If late and nurse call
As I had more time than all
Mine was a shift worker
ugh!
Put the old hoover in the car
Ram the key in the lock
and forget all the hate
In laws
Only had our little girl one week
Please!
"Wash my face
and comb my hair"
pop would ask
Never wanted
a nurse to poke him about
I Put him out on the commode
hardly seen one in my life!
Then gave him a kiss
and cuddle
as I put him into bed
As one son always asleep
youngest out six
Tear ducts falling
that were left
I thought he would speak!
Told another morphine injection
Nurse came later
The needle so big!
I'd say
silly! me
"Never mind it will
Help you to sleep"
But bit brutal
Nurse came later
"By the looks of him
won't need"
What a re-mark to make
I felt like saying
"You silly cat"
Some family arrived
we all around the bed
No hospice would he go
A friend given him
A Rosary
I took it out the draw
and sat and prayed
Please!
Don't suffer pop
too long
The dad I loved
Slipping away
Always said
"When you go
A pint of beer
and a fag"
best way
all though his fingers stained
with nicotone in those days
I would crush his pills
for him as he had a goyter
His psychic mind was right
one birthday did all my gift's
up in baby paper
I lived there then
Why"
Did he do it
I never said
But turned me out
Baby on the way
not married
So glad I could be with him
on that last day
One of the family
counted the breaths
"That's it he's gone!
Come out and close the door
So all along the pub we went
I'd seen a friend when young
had died laying so
Peaceful!
In his home
with his skin
after coughing so much
all new and bright again
So then a sister and I
went to the chapel of rest!
Dear pop laying there in
White satin
Arms folded across his chest
Oh1 My goodness!
What had they done!
Puffed!
His cheeks out
It' wasn't nice
after being so thin in life
I thought like!
I saw someones husband
once
Pop!
Be laying there
Looking all serene
One last kiss
and both ran out quick!
So I would say to all
just remember the good
and not bad times
leave them just as they are!
Fill them with love
and hold their hand
Give them a kiss
Like somewhere
The Sands Of Time
Are filtering through
When you watch an egg timer.
Sifting to.
I hope the angels
have opened the
pearly gates
And he is in heaven
never made it
for a pension
There are good and bad spirits to
that's another story
I know!
