More Than Just a Hat

After the snow melted
And its ice tide had crawled away
Revealing the road again
We began to find things that we had lost;
mislaid.
For example: a woolen hat I'd bought you
as a birthday present lay, flattened by
car tyres, covered in black oil and dirt.
It lay there like a dead...jellyfish,
Washed up on a tarmac shore.
I bent to fish it out but you said:
"No. Leave it. It's too far gone."
I couldn't help but feel it was more than just
a hat that we were leaving behind; but it wasn't.

Thought provoking imagery here. I really enjoyed this piece. I wish I had stumbled upon it earlier.
