They scattered you
on a rose bed
reserved for babies;
I wasn't there.
That's what they did
back in the swinging 60s
when I was young
but not swinging,
my womb heaving
as you fought your
way out, protesting when
they cut you from me.
But now you
have been so long dead,
I wonder were you
ever alive long enough
for me to call you son.
I know that I held you
and loved you for
oh such a brief time,
before they took you away
and fed you to the roses,
leaving me empty
but for my weeping
breasts. And now I no
longer recall your face,
your hair, your new
baby skin - you have
been so long dead
there is only the pain
of never knowing you,
forever missing you -
my son, my son.

This reminds me a little of Jon Silkin's Death of a Son Aged One in that it is written beautifully, with such feeling and that it made me cry. Can't imagine the pain, but this is a song I am sure that needed to be sung. ATB FB.

it's the simplicity that makes this work so well. I think I've said that before, but it's true. Beautiful.

I know I've come across this one a bit late, seashore - I sort of stumbled upon it. You have so many nice poems, but this really got me. Very well written.

Can't believe I've only just seen this, Coral - I tried not to cry, I honestly did, but I'm afraid I just couldn't hold the tears in, this is so beautiful and heartbreaking that I'm speechless. You definitely found your voice here, thanks so much for posting this it really is a treasure and I salute your bravery - no doubt this was as painful to write as it was to read, and I hope seeing this in print has brought you some comfort and relief :)
Hope the spammer's gone now, too ;)
