Jennifer Jane found herself alone outside a cave in the mountainside, feeling just a little bit frightened.
"Well, well, a jolly nice little human gel," said a booming voice from the cave. "Do come in, my dear and bring all that delicious looking food with you."
There was a muffled roar and Jennifer Jane could just see flames for a moment or two inside the cave.
‘Well, he sounds nice enough and he's obviously well fed with crunchy bits,’ thought Jennifer Jane, ‘so I'll just have to be brave and go in.’
She pushed the loaded trolley into the cave and there, sitting on top of a large heap of glittering treasure, was a bright green dragon with smoke trickling from his nostrils. The dragon looked at her with his large golden eyes.
"You may call me Clarence, my dear. And what, pray, is your name?"
"Good afternoon, Mr Clarence, my name is Jennifer Jane."
"What a nicely spoken young gel. Such a change. You don't feel like screaming do you?"
"Not at all, thank you,” said Jennifer Jane, who was beginning to wonder why people had ever been scared of dragons. This one seemed to be ever so nice and friendly.
"Oh, jolly good," said Clarence, "just pull up a heap of treasure to sit on and we'll have a nice chat."
Jennifer Jane did as she was asked and began making friends with the dragon. He was soon telling her stories all about the good old days.
Jennifer Jane suddenly remembered the time. "I'm afraid I really must be going now," she said, "I promised my Mum I'd be home in time for tea."
Clarence looked at her sadly. "Would you not care to stay for a bite at suppertime?" he asked, licking his lips.
Jennifer Jane suddenly felt a little bit frightened again. The dragon had rather a funny look on his face and she thought that the 'bite' might somehow include her!
"No, thank you," she said firmly, "I really must be going" and she turned and ran out of the cave.
Behind her she could hear Clarence grumbling to himself. "Such a nice young gel....after all these years..... still a bargain's a bargain even at seven and a half percent..." The voice faded into the distance.
"Frosty!" called Jennifer Jane and the cloud arrived very quickly. "Home please," she said and they were soon on well on the way.
"Wasn't sure if I'd see you again," said Frosty, "dragons are very cunning you know, even the nice ones like Clarence."
"Yes," laughed Jennifer Jane, very relieved to be on her way home safely, "I think I realised that for myself just in time."
"All's well that ends well," replied Frosty and in no time at all he was letting Jennifer Jane off the cloud at the end of her garden.
"Run along now and you'll be just in time for tea."
Jennifer Jane ran indoors.
"Ah! Just right, dear," said Mum. "Will you go and tell your Dad that tea's ready?"
Jennifer Jane went into the sitting room where he was watching the end of a ballet on television.
"Tea's ready, Dad!" she said.
"Right you are," he said and turned off the set.
"I've just been watching The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," he said. "Funny sort of name for a fairy, I wonder where the name came from?"
'Oh dear,' thought Jennifer Jane. 'Not another one! One at a time is more than enough."
"Just come and have tea with us" she said aloud and holding dad’s hand, she led him into the dining room.
