Sightless My Mind's Eye

Tell me gentles what you see
Behind your lidded eyes?
Can you behold a sunset,
Or conjure cloudless skies?
In your imagination
Can you spy a lush green hill?
Can your mind's eye reveal
A grey sea never still?
Can you paint a landscape
Of autumn's brown clad trees,
Or flowers softly swaying
In a timid summer breeze?
Can you see a loved one,
Discern their smiling face?
Picture them within your arms
Wrapped in your embrace?
For me there's mostly shadows
Once my eyes fall shut,
Interspersed by flashing lights
I see no image but
I do not view this failing
As some kind of a curse,
I do not crave your sympathy
In truth it could be worse;
For words instead come to me
Describing what's unseen,
I might not see its colour
Yet I "hear" the hill is green.
I see no trees or sunsets
Sightless my mind's eye,
By words alone, not pictures
My imaginings let fly.
