Towing her canoe on its trolley behind her, Jennifer Jane walked along the woodland paths, on her way to Wilfred’s pool. When she arrived, she was rather surprised to find that he already had company.
She recognised Polly, one of the fairies who worked in the Wish Warehouse and then Robert, who was the engineer and maintenance apprentice, from the Witches’ Home.
“Good morning everybody, what’s happening?”
Robert explained that he was replacing the salt spell in the giant’s water pump.
“He’s ever so clever,” said Polly, “he’s already taken the cover off and replaced the spell with the new one that I brought over and now he’s going to screw the lid back onto the pump.”
Jennifer Jane didn’t think it sounded all that wonderful, after all what was so difficult about, ‘remove cover, insert new spell, replace cover?’ But then Polly was a great admirer of Robert and took every opportunity to travel to the Witches’ home to meet him and have a chat.
“I’m just off to the Witches’ Home to see Abigail,” she said, “I’ll race you there if you’ve nearly finished here.”
Robert laughed. “I don’t think you stand much of a chance; Polly and I came over on my flying carpet. We’ll be back ages before you can even reach the wishing fog!”
Jennifer Jane ran round to the quayside opposite the giant, packed her trolley into ‘Drawrof’ and paddled as fast as she could into the stream. Robert finished screwing down the cover that made the pump look like an ordinary rock, while Polly packed all his tools neatly on the carpet.
Wilfred smiled as they all rushed away to start their race, then kicked the rock to make sure the pump was working correctly. He kicked it once more to turn it off again and then settled down to a good morning’s cry. After all, the pump was only supposed to be used so that he could have forty winks, after the goblins had brought him his dinner.
