Woodpecking

woodpecker in the garden,
why so carefree?
you are but a winged lumberjack,
living off the trees.
is it because your camouflage,
hides you from prying eyes,
your red, yellow, green cloak,
an arrogant disguise.
or is it your token wings,
that carry you through the air,
the time spent in the sky,
that frees you from your cares?
is it your knowledge of life,
limited by what you see,
no understanding of others,
selfishness with no fee.
or is it something I don't know,
a secret that you keep,
the same thing that breeds weightlessness,
and flattens what is steep.
I don't want to know the answer,
hide it if you can,
birds were made to fly up high,
not be tethered down by man.
but loud little woodpecker,
bounding so carefree,
I wonder if its possible,
for you to lend how you feel to me.
