When they came together
They found that there was nothing
That the other didn’t make better
If she’d never left the BBC
If he hadn’t followed in the footsteps of his family
Where would they be?
They would never have explored the London streets
Sat hand-in-hand on faded tube seats
Never found the words on a beach in Thailand
In the morning, on the sand
Never built the life
Two uniforms in a wardrobe, side-by-side
Never seen the secret smiles
In each other’s faces
Never abandoned the world
And its competitive races
They wouldn’t have left the city, built a home
Spent idle days in a garden of their own
Climbed the stairs to bed each night
Learnt how to make up after a fight
Never known each other’s families
Or felt the pain of absences
Never made a proposal on a bridge
Disbelief followed by a kiss
But ‘if they’d never’ didn’t happen
Neither did ‘ifs’ or ‘maybes’
In fact, things just got better
Because then they had a baby
Adam became a father, Soph became a mother
And today they’ve come together
Because they found each other.
