Follow the leader.

Dazed,
we play
follow the leader
tripping & falling
but moving
forwards.

My heart pounds
in my feet,
heavy,
but not heavy enough
to stop the movement.

As mist,
the clouds sank down around us,
Our dreams on the ground
they fell
shattered.

They fired shots,
we fired shots,
stabbing the sky with metal,
filling the earth
with red iron.

We pretended it was holy,
or I did,
maybe to you it was.

We sailed away,
letters,
to mothers, sister & wives
sinking behind us.
Our words
of righteousness.
Promises of men,
& the return of hero’s
lost deep in the sea.

The fire,
it should have been
orange and yellow,
warm,
nourishing us.

But it was flashing
grey steel in the sky.
