Home At Last

The gate was closed but still he entered
The path was long and straight
He knew where he was going, home.
As the door came closer, he smiled
A smile that had long passed his lips
Many years ago, too many to count.
It had used to be Red, but now was Green
Fresh paint by the look and smell
Flowers around the porch, still blooming
He stopped and waited, nervous now
He had dreamed of this moment
Now it was here, this was his time
He savoured it, breathed it in
Then went on, his hand on the door
Slowly turning the key, pushing gently
Then it happened, the sight he had longed for
The touch and smell he had missed
"Welcome home son", mums voice sounded like velvet
Dad was smiling as a tear began to fall
This big man, this big honest man was crying
The smile, the warmth, the love
He knew exactly where he was
He was home, home at last.
