Winter's Forgotten

Never will they reconcile themselves to
the doorway of loneliness – of foreboding
fear, cardboard cities reconstructed and
consumed by wolves of the urban night...
panic, fear on those tough runaway streets,
a body aches for the warmth of comfort...
a simple smile where none is to be found,
neglected – abandoned as the night time
luminary glows on a distant conurbation,
faraway roistering drives them on in search
of sanctuary...where miscreants do not inhabit.
Distracted by a faint whisper...icy air bites
through their senses, silent they tremble to
sounds of chill winds. Staring up into the
night sky...dizzy from the intoxicating fruit
of the vine...inebriation is all around, fear
raises its ugly head...self inflicted pain cuts
through them like a knife, yearning for sleep,
searching for sanity...a distant shelter entices
them ever closer...a porch through which
protection cannot be denied, where there souls
can depart. Their uninhabited forms which lie so
still...going forward, but for the fleeting glimpse
of empty vessels, the void leads them on, bodies
lying motionless. Floating ghost like...all past
memories withdrawn, still drifting...reaching
for that something they cannot see or feel...a
world within a world, stirring them through
dimensions, knowing nothing...without feeling,
senses numb...they are swallowed by eternal rest.
