The Branch Library
By hilary west
- 1360 reads
A decaying house in need of repair,
Drips from the roof causin' despair.
Never meant to house librarians,
Now reading rooms for nonagenarians.
This is our branch library,
A home for us,
Sandy, Lizzie, Val and Gus.
Stampin' 'em in and stampin' em out
Dizzy Lizzie lets it all hang out.
Then there's Val our first gal
Not a bit of malice,
Picks her way through the CD's
Madonna, Cher or Thomas Tallis.
Gus and Sandy welcome the customers,
Edith Dent and Betty Luximus.
Boys from the Borstal come in with their dogs,
Takin' bets, in from the fog.
Always smilin', so beguilin',
Lucy Wonder is next in.
Hair out of a bleach bottle
And white rubber boots,
Finds it hard to conceal her roots.
And then in charge we have little Miss Stoop
Every lunchtime heats up Heinz soup.
It is a world of literary fiction,
We try to comprehend their poor diction.
But all in all it is a time
Where happiness comes spending no dimes.
Another world in our imagination,
Just left of Asda, down by the station!
