IF YOUR FACE FITS .........

Been down all the right roads,
Knocked on all the right doors,
Spoken politely, pressed the correct buttons,
Smiled ......been 'nice'.
And got nowhere -
- - It's a "Face-fit" thing, you see.
I'm clever, brilliant at most things;
Could well outshine them any day.
Yet they've decided this could never be,
And so
Have thus dismissed me out of hand. But oh,
This dreadful, intangible 'Face-fit' dilemma!
If only I possessed
Those coveted clique-busting "apps." -
Like contacts, connections, and secret
Right handshake confidences ......
I'd worm my way into their sleek charmed lives, perhaps;
No questions asked,
- - Face-value taken, you see.
"If you can't beat 'em, join 'em",
So the saying goes;
But what if they don't want me, even so?
I'll have to play the sycophantic drivel game -
Try feigning interest in their clubs, societies and work;
It's what we all do, isn't it?
But soon, they'll suss ....... they'll suss
That I am not one of them, and cannot ever be
Because
- - It's a "Face-fit" thing, you see.
I do not own an old school tie,
And know no friends of friends;
No one to pave my way, or help
Me feet find higher rungs;
Right place, right time,
Right bed, right name -
Not one of these is me ........
Just 'who you know' to open doors -
- - It's a 'Face-fit' thing, you see.
