Death of a tree

The tree stood, as it had, for a hundred years
In the green forest, full of elven tears
Beneath it stood a hoard of marauding trolls
They had approached in numbers, over grassy knolls.
The tree stood there silent, looking down in sorrow
Fearing for itself, and the loss of tomorrow
In the tree, sat two fearful elves
Fearing for the tree, and themselves.
Down below the trolls piled up the wood
Dead and dry, so light a fire, they could
Jeering and shouting, they called down the elves
Who left the tree, condemning themselves.
From the trunk, sap trickled down in waves
The tree's tears at the loss of its elven braves
Away with the elves went most of the trolls
Away again over the nearby grassy knolls.
Left behind, two trolls stood at the base of the tree
Torches in hand, so the tree could see
Setting fire to the wood, they set the tree on fire
Dying painfully slowly it did, on its pyre.
