Tiny threats

Today I forgot my shoes
and went to work in the rain
I did not notice because I have become
numb
inured to the tiny threats
which fall upon my shoulders
like dandruff
and weigh me down
I wandered into Starbucks
in Oxford Street
my socked feet left a slugs trail
betraying my sodden path
Having purchased a egg mayonnaise wrap
I became dizzy
again
and I thought
I do not want to die in here amongst the deceptively fattening sandwiches and individually wrapped fruit portions
So I made it home
as I will do
again and again
until it is time to end my part
in this wretched war
My feet are always wet
and yet
you never tire of drying them
between your velveteen fingers
You brush the tiny threats
from my shoulders
and find new places
for me to hide
And we resume
our search
for armistice
