Cherries Are Not the Only Fruit

Throw myself into gardening this morning...
autumn, fast giving way to winter – trees
to prune, the vegetable patch to be dug
and beanpoles taken down.
Peace of mind to be reclaimed
amidst a kind of grieving; the only way.
Bulbs – rotting where they hang
in the potting shed; open bags
of John Innes Number Three
spill out on a leaf-strewn floor;
empty seed trays, stacked – one
inside the other on a makeshift bench,
littered with droppings of a visiting vole
and I wonder why she doesn’t call, and if
the cherry tree will fruit again,
next year...
as I hear her saying, ‘Why do you
hold on to all that pain? And me
replying, ‘I’ll put it down then...
only – where?’

Speaks volumes, that. Loved the feel of this. And that ending that leaves one hopeful.

Such a mixture, enjoying
Such a mixture, enjoying noticing all that lovely ordiary detail again, but sharing the struggles succinctly.
The tree silhouettes (hope I've spelt it correctly this time!) are showing up wonderfully now that the last of the leaves are clearing aren't they? Some compensation for the end of autumn beauty. Rhiannon

I especially like the last
I especially like the last stanza Tina- sometimes we have to be brought 'back to reality' the here and now however harsh it may feel.

Such a poignant close, Tina, and beautiful put. Really loved the imagery and I was in the garden with you! Well done on the cherries!

Hi Tina, another insightful poem, and very well received. Your journey may never end, due to the vast arena of vegetables awaiting recording, assessing and eating---so many to come, but the pain will subside. Richard

Hi Tina,
it seems like we both have the season on our mind.
The garden is hard work, but the pleasures are
immeasurable. I think your poem sums this up well.
Let's hope next seasons harvest will be plentiful.
Really enjoyed your writing, but then it's always such a pleasure to read.
Jenny.
