Still Life

Grey eggs, stale bread
funky, mouldy noodles
hard cheese, crumbling crackers
milk that's ten days old
Unmade bed, unfinished notes
Songs tuneless, missing lyrics
Tales with open endings
Journeys with no roads
Words in clashing colours
Mismatched jarring vowels
Skipped beats with no rhythm
Forced rhymes on overload
Bum marks on the sofa
Grease marks on the mirror
Bookmarks in all pages
in random cryptic code
Fruitflies with no appetite
Potato eyes all blinded
Violets by the window
shrinking, never bold
Air with frozen dust specks
Sun pale and mournful
Moonshine wan and listless
Stars brittle, underglowed
Thoughts never spoken
Feelings into hiding
Breath held forever
Heart stopped, stony cold
Sleep done in snatches
Cries ever whispered
Dreams only nightmares
Life is kept on hold
