Take a step back the better to see,
take a step back, look up at the whole,
take a step back – eye the wood, not each tree:

but when you step backward don’t fall in that hole!

Take a step back from the rush and the dash,
take a step back from an onerous role,
take a step back from the chase, race for cash:

but when you step backward don’t fall in the hole!

Watching your step when you’re ever so busy,
watching your step when intent on your task,
watching your step when the stress makes you dizzy:
but when you relax,
and just take a step back,

forgetting to look, you crash down with a crack!

Hello Rhiannon, Quick off the block again I see. I enjoyed this but my favourite is the first stanza particularly 'take a step back – eye the wood, not each tree:' Loved that and the last line. Moya

eye the wood, not the tree...that made me smile...this made me think of a person backing up to take a photo and going off the edge of a cliff :) - alvin

Yes, that was the idea Alvin, and combining it with the carelessness that comes with the relaxing kind of stepping back from work, and, at the back of my mind the 'falling down a hole' because of pride (nose in the air, not looking, too sure of yourself!) - 'pride … before a fall' Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon

This sort of reads like a song - with the refrain tying it together. Being involved with music, I expect that rhythm comes quite naturally to you.

Yes, it's nice writing with a rhythm. My first writings were largely with tunes in mind, which helped to get a feel for rhythm. I'd forgotten about this little 'ditty' but it is true when you relax from pressure you can get careless in more ways than one! Rhiannon
