Magpie

They say if you see a magpie flying alone
It is a sorrowful sign
Maybe it’s just fallen out of love
And wants to take a little time
To ponder what life is about
As it swoops from tree to grass
Hanging out with a couple of crows
Waiting for things to pass
And who is to say that its cacking
Is not a happy song being sung
Maybe its just fun being single
Flying free whilst still young
Maybe the magpie’s grandfather
Taught him a thing or three
Perhaps a profound saying, like
Plenty more birds in the tree
And when it bounces on the path
Or sings up at the sky
It might have joined a dating site
And has got its first reply
The single life has its moments
But the nesting instinct begs
So it’s off to a magpie disco
To fertilise some eggs
