Like He Should Have Done

Stiff white collar, top button done, tie knotted
Like HE would have done.
Polish black brogues, shiny as a mirror,
Like HE would have done.
Hair gelled, combed back, slick and wet
Like HE would have done.
Brush dust from your shoulders, immaculate,
Like HE would have done.
Hold her hand as you slowly walk, tight,
Like HE would have done.
Look up, give a smile, give a wink
Like HE would have done.
HE passes, boxed, draped in colours, be strong
Like HE would have done.
Don’t cry, be proud, stand up straight.
Like HE would have done.
Mum looks down, “Promise me, stay here, safe.”
Like HE should have done.

So, so sad.
So, so sad.
You some up very well the futility of war and the despair of the families left behind.

And people have not learnt
And people have not learnt from the past's numerous ghastly mistakes, like HE cannot do now...

You have a skill with the use
You have a skill with the use of repetition in your poetry. This piece is powerfully moving as it gradually builds, and sad. That repeated line got me.
