A.M.

3 A.M. and I am still awake
with this demon grinning on my chest.
My conscience aches, and numbness
teases darkness
to inch its way into my brain.
The more I think I need to sleep,
the more awake I am. At 3 A.M.
I walk into the creeping dawn
where bats and foxes grow
accustomed to my moonly jaunts.
This can't go on - awake each night
until pink morning threads
through failing drapes, and suddenly
I'm sound asleep, dreaming
that I must get up and start the day.
And sleepy I will be,
at least till 3 A.M.
A dreamless wake
A wreck, I am
Awake
A.M.
I am.

Trying to sleep when you can
Trying to sleep when you can't makes things worse for sure. Walking it out sounds like a good idea as opposed to lying there agonizing over it.

Sleep is such a gift, but
Sleep is such a gift, but there is something about those super-tired times when sleep will not come that sharpens imagination, a hassle when you have stuff to do though. I like the shift to the acknowledgement of being. We can sleepwalk though life but this feels like the opposite.

You have a knack of
You have a knack of describing your feelings. When I had to wake to my father-in-law's calls, when he was still here, I got to frequently not be able to get back to sleep, and in the end found I had to mix sometimes doing something (reading, writing …??), but sometimes just lying dreamily, and not worrying about going to sleep, which I still find a help, when getting myself too wide awake. It seems to leave me less tired the next day. Naps in the day have to be limited I find, but can be essential – not too long! Rhiannon

Hi Bee
Hi Bee
I too am often awake at 3 a.m. - as I'm sure are lots of others. But I have never gone on a moonlight walk. Sometimes I read, sometimes I play games on the computer. Sometimes I just decide to not worry about it and lie there enjoying the rest. But unlike you, I don't have a reason for my sleeplessness, other than growing older. Next time you are awake at 3 a.m. think of us thinking of you, and wishing you well.

Hi Bee
Lying in bed with that damn pump pushing chemicals into me to keep me alive, I often stayed awake with that uncomfortable piece of plastic sticking in my ribs till three or until I was so exhaused I passed out, but that was over five years ago....

It's 4 am for me. Usually
It's 4 am for me. Usually when the kids wake up. When everyone else is asleep is when the thoughts start creeping in as you so powerfully described. It becomes a cycle which is highlighted so well by your structure and repeated time.

Hello Bee,
Hello Bee,
Another clever, well thought out, poem that will resonate with so many. I don't sleep well either and the worst nights are the ones when I see every hour pass. But I usually try to get up and then I just wander about not able to settle until dawn comes often with a companion...sleep!
Keep writing Bee. It is always a joy to read anything you have written.
Moya xx
