The Memory Tree

Sam McDonough's memory tree was planted in the front yard of our dear friends the Zwahlens of Waterville, NY. We look forward to many more happy visits.
The Memory Tree
Planted with love and care
the little blue spruce
blossomed.
it soaked up the sun,
holding memories of
fonder days.
a tribute to a
young life
now gone, but
still in our hearts
and still in the
places he roamed.
a bench will soon
be the tree's
companion,
a place to reflect
and catch one's
breath when life
overwhelms
we will sit and
sing a song.
nothing sad or
bitter,
but a joyful song
of love for what was
and what will be.
rest easy, sweet boy,
rest easy

What a lovely poem and what a
What a lovely poem and what a lovely idea! The poem seems to be describing a feeling of quiet acceptance in tranquil surroundings but the love shines through..Derek's two unmarried sisters have a bench in Thorndon Park which says 'Rest awhile with two sisters once more reunited'.
My thoughts are with you, Rich xx

The poem is beautiful, Rich.
The poem is beautiful, Rich. And how wonderful to have a place to sit and think - be with your boy and remember his true self. Your poem moved me to tears, but I realise it's also about treasuring all the happy memories too, and you show that here so well.

This is gorgeous. It folded me. I think that you have captured an expanse of deep loss in your simple depiction of the spruce and the bench, in the act of reflection, in the bid to preserve joy not sadness. Poignant, humbling and shining.
