Communication – thoughtful language, not just words (IP)

A pattern of sounds, a chosen word,
by which a thought can be transferred
from my head to yours,
or yours to mine;
but when it’s a complex, but useful idea,
a word or a gesture may not make it clear.
I need a linkage on rules we both know,
so the language enables my story to flow
– real connection, communication:
with noun-words for who, or where, or what,
and words for the doing of this and that,
the verbs in right tense,
so all will make sense,
with reasons and causes
in seperate clauses,
linked by conjunction,
– I need punctuation,
(or pause for a breath if I’m speaking!),
explaining the reasons for things, and the ‘how’,
and indicate time, the when, or the now,
and not forgetting the words descriptive,
that make it more meaningful, also attractive.
The rules we’ve absorbed,
from childhood, and stored,
for speech that’s articulate
that will clearly communicate,
we must not abuse,
or misunderstandings abound, and confuse,
and all will become just a time-filling babble;
and if I don’t bother to take thought and trouble,
to sympathise, empathise,
we weary each other,
with froth and with bubble,
its message untraceable,
– and you would prefer golden silence,
or a smile, or a touch,
to word-noise that is of no consequence.

Hi Rhiannon
Hi Rhiannon
A good summary of what written and spoken language is all about. What would we do without words? I suppose the blind and the deaf have compensations, but what a sad world it must be.
