Like a Baby

Did I bawl like a baby this morning when I read his reply to my sending him the poem I wrote for him; the one I posted here here the other day under the title, 'Boy'? If truth be told, I didn't really expect a reply at all. My son is not one for keeping in touch on a regular basis. He isn't one for writing poems, either, and doesn't claim to be a poet, but I just wanted to share what he wrote. I think it's beautiful, and though tinged with some sadness and unnecessary guilt, it follows on from my post, so I thought it would be nice to add it here. And yes, I bawled like a baby when I read it - it meant so much to me.
_____
Mum.
You did bequeath each thought each sound recalled.
You wove and stitched my mind's eye's rich brocade.
And now as memories begin to fade,
Your love yet not lost holds me still enthralled.
I hear you as I speak aloud each sound.
You colored in my world my every day,
And just as he through man gives form to clay,
You carefully nourished each new thing I found.
But not for you what would I be? No more!
'Twas freely that you of your self did pour
I caused you pain that no one should endure
Yet still you gave and still I from you tore.
Your spring and summer years you gave to me
And owing that these I cannot return
To honor you who made me I will yearn
That I might hold a candle up to thee
All gone boy.

He manages to convey and
He manages to convey and appreciate the depths involved in a Mum's love and giving, the enrichening through constant care and the multiplicity of little contacts and helps, understanding and sharing that are probably so much more important than the bigger things that are more often noticed by others. Lovely to read. Rhiannon

Finding the right words to
Finding the right words to say, to capture your feelings in a poem is priceless. Your son has written a fine poem and that speaks with so much emotion. Like Jane said, it must be in the genes.
Beautiful and tender.
