Waves of migration
from persecution:
hard adaptation,
deep appreciation
of freedom, protection;

or short-term incursion
for paid occupation,
hard work, willing labour,
grateful for favour:
return with support
for family caught
in famine of cash
and poverty’s lash;

but some emigration
away from our nation,
fleeing frustration
with crime and taxation,
or rain – they desire
a warm place to retire:

but may get deflated,
no longer elated
with warmth or large villa,
return to familiar
roots and old home
whose ways are well known –
re-immigration,
repatriation:

no land of perfection
in this life is found.

This has great rhythm and rhyme. You have covered the subject so well, Rhiannon. I really enjoyed reading this. One for reading out loud, I think.

Thank you, Bee. As others had thought quite a bit about the birds' feats, my mind went to people movements in different situations. We have had quite a bit of contact with strawberry pickers and others coming into Herefordshire to work, sometimes temporarily, sometimes settling. Rhiannon

I loved the rhythm and the rhyme plan which gives the whole thing a lively pace. I could almost hear it being read aloud! (as Bee said above).

Interestingly, this is from before the recent huge floods of moving peoples. As I said in one reply, we were familiar with many coming over for seasonal fruit picking work, and some working hard and staying permanently, or sending back money from the local post office to relations back home.
And there were many clear issues from which the few fled pesecution.
But also, the 'seeking the sun' of British expatriates, sometimes buying cheaply abroad, but in time, for various reasons, gladly returning. Rhiannon
