I've yet to speak to god
regarding the death of my son
the closest I've come is a cold-hard 
stare and a 'Fuck off!
I'm not talking to you just yet!'

I need me a forest to scream in
a place where I can let it all out
I carry anger around like a prized possession
something to keep to myself
lest someone steal my inner thunder with 
kindness and understanding

I need a retreat where I can 
bend trees with verbal rage
scatter clouds
pulverize stars
piss off the heavens
with an endless rant
full of whys

I want answers
dammit!
none will be given
I know
it doesn't work that way
never has

It's as though it happened yesterday
that last trip to the hospital
the endless days and nights 
of faith, hope
then, finally,
despair
ashes to ashes
dust to dust
just like that

I need me a forest to scream in
a place where I can let it all out

I need me a forest to scream it all out, is something I'd say to my wife when I'd find myself in a pit of grief. These words came in a rush so I wrote them down without much form. I didn't want to toy with it. It helps. Thanks for all the kind words, you lovely bunch.

Dear Rich, 

It's ripped my heart in two, reading this. So perfectly expressed anguish. So perfectly expressed everything in what would be / is a beautiful poem, but for the subject matter. I too hope you find your forest, or failing that, a good scream into the airing cupboard might bring momentary relief.

It's all there, in the words. There's a sense of the majestic in the natural imagery. A forest is so absorbent, holds you.

Jesus. I'm stunned. You colour in all the shades of loss and paint it as a much more complex thing than I have ever imagined.

Many thanks for all the lovely comments on the poem, you good people. Just when I thought I didn't have anything more to say, this came along. I thought I'd be moving on and writing about the fun part of having been a parent. But I'd somehow forgot about the anger that goes along with grieving. It creeps up on you when you least expect it. And if I've learned anything, it's that it's okay to be angry. Neccesary even. Nothing more cleansing than a good scream and a cry in the shower. When I get to Nottingham in August Sherwood better be prepared. xx
