Unseen

( The Son of Man is a 1964 painting by the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte. Magritte painted it as a self-portrait.)
Here I stand alone,
I watch your approach,
Beginning to have doubts
Wondering if it will be different,
Or just more of the same
So armed with a courageous smile,
Paired with a shaky step,
The quest begins anew
You pause and meet my eyes,
My heart quickens
Until once again,
I am defeated by a gesture
You act as if it is a gift,
That cruel casual nod,
You bestow before walking on
Not even pausing to see,
What was left in your wake
It is my fault of course,
Silly me assumed too much
There was this hope,
You would stand,
Then offer a moment,
Of companionship,
To this ‘son of man’
But I see you are busy,
And I remain unseen
So I will endure here,
Waiting to be greeted,
Day after day it seems,
By the world's disinterest
