Parallel Cooking
P K Routray
An experience I must share
that I have preserved for sixty years with care.
That dazzled in comparison
to the system now is in common.
Over generations after generations
a clan shared the same house without partitions
sharing the rooms, court yards and kitchen
with cooperation, fun, fight and friction.
Bitterness of fight did occur but lived short,
To end it elders and youngsters contributed a lot.
The subject being myriad I limit my option
to only the part of kitchen and dining portion.
In one kitchen parallel cooking took place
Ladies folk enjoyed the cooking with laughter in their face
cooperating, chitchatting they cooked with pleasure.
The dishes got enriched with nutrients from their spirit in ample measure
The dishes got distributed and shared with joy.
Over eating took place with tasty dishes by the way..
The monotony of single cook and lone kitchen
even with music to taste today cannot be hidden.
The environment of kitchen and dining space prevailing then
is missing in mechanized modern kitchen looking desolate and barren
I long to go back, squat on the floor to get the dishes from my auntie’s hand
with “some more and some more” sweet sound, smile of satisfaction from my mother grand.

Enjoyed this, a reminder of
Enjoyed this, a reminder of some of the positives of cramped living, sharing and co-operation were key. Now we're all so obsessed with cleanliness and having our own space, it's all very clinical. We're a social species, like rabbits, who live in complex social groups. Never keep a rabbit alone in a hutch, their lives are cut short by loneliness. Sorry I went off topic there.

This is so true, a brilliant
This is so true, a brilliant idea to write about, thankyou for posting! I used to have only myself to cook for and love cooking for my family now, it's the best. The kitchen is the most important room for sure :0) I hope my son has such happy memories as you have shared so eloquently here
