It had been a triumph
on the opening night.
The star of the show
had taken a bow
and now
was leaving the stage.
He was one of many
who’d cried “Encore”.
He had applauded
and shouted so much
that his throat was sore.
But it was worth the pain.
He thought she had
a magnificent voice
and a beautiful face.
He wished that he could
be given the choice
of seeing her again.
To meet at long last
this girl so bonny
with a youthful gait,
he has to act fast
and so lies in wait
- a stage-door Johnny.
But when she comes out
with makeup removed,
her wrinkles reveal
that she’s very old.
Proving that what glitters
is not always gold.
