Look at me, occasionally there's

instantaneous beauty to the eye,

then every once in a while my

disposition causes misled distaste,

 

like my wrinkles there are layers;

I do not hunger to cause pain, but

my instincts if distressed are to

attack, retaliate when aggrieved.

 

Like my ancestors before me

I've heard revenge is sweet,

fighting dogs trained to attack

always striking to the bitter end,

 

depictions from long ago Chinese artists,

portrayals of descendant Shar-Pei dogs

guarding grandiose emperors palaces,

constant reminder of where I came from,

 

with my smooth drooping ears set against

mounds of fleshy skin, somber bijou eyes

observe as you study this puzzled expression,

in fact puppy is decoding if your friend or foe.

 

Adorn me with your love and affection

I'll be your loyal companion always,

a devoted presence with commitment;

not weak but cautious towards strangers.

You've done justice to "wrinkles" with this poem Jenny. "I'll be your loyal companion always" is true of dogs as all they want is to please their owners.

Do you own such a dog, Jenny? Need to give dogs time to get to know you don't you?

I gather that there has been a tendency to exaggerate the wrinkles more by breeding, which has caused the dogs problems. Rhiannon

It's true what you say Edward. I was reading that these dogs can become aggresive if not bought up right from puppies, so I suppose it all depends on the owners and how they treat their Shar-Pei puppies, it's all about the training in the end.

Hi Rhiannon,

in answer to your question as to whether I own a Shar-Pei, I don't own one and have heard they are very expensive to buy. 

As soon as I saw the I P for wrinkles, I immediately thought of these adorable dogs. Apparently they loose a lot of their wrinkles as they grow into adult dogs. They can also become very clingy to their owners which wouldn't really appeal to me, but I still think they are cute, especially as puppies.

That is such a shame about the breeding process, just wish humans would stop mucking about with mother nature and accept things for what they are.

Oh! By the way, thank you for your enquirery into how I'm doing. It's going to be a long road, but I'm getting there. I've had my stitches taken out and finished with the blood thinning injections...thank goodness. 

I'm going into my fifth week now and yesterday I managed a 45 minute walk for the first time with one stick. Although I have to say that I do walk around the supermarket shopping with my partner, then I'm walking for an hour and a half, but It's hard going and I'm always knackered by the time I get home. The excercises are going well each day. I still can't manage to get a full nights sleep though, having to lay constantly on my back, but getting up and walking around helps, plus having a hot drink.

I know it will all come together in the end and look forward to striding out.

A good read, Jenny. You have chosen the perfect subject for the wrinkle I.P.
I saw that picture while I was searching the web for an image to use with my poem, but it didn't inspire me as it did you. Well done.

thank you so much for taking a look at my poem. The puppy in the picture is so appealing. I often wonder what it would be like to spend time writing a poem, only then to discover someone else has come up with the same idea.

They get less wrinkly as they get older? The Benjamin Button of dogs?  It is a good lesson to remember that they are cautious and wondering about you as much as you are wondering about them. Also a brilliant message about nature and nurture - even a dog bred to fight will be loyal and gentle if treated right

Too right Di_Hard, it certainly does have a lot to do with the way the owner treats their dog. Give it a loving home with plenty of cuddles and it will be your friend for life.

I love the idea of the Shar-Pei being the Benjamin Button of dogs.
