Rub the fat
into the flour,
and after that
stir in the fruit and sugar;
mix,
add milk and egg –
to fix
a dough
that’s firm enough
for rolling thin
upon a floured board, and then
cut them out,
and cook upon
the heated bakestone –
when that side's done,
turn;
– before they burn
take them off the griddle
on to the cooling rack,
with sugar sprinkle,
and soon partake
delicious little tasty cake.

*Welsh cakes [ pronounced pick-eh ahr uh mine: the meaning seems to be little Welsh cakes on the stone ie bakestone ie griddle]

They are, though my husband isn't very keen, so I haven't made them for a long time!

A bit of fun, as couldn't think of anything straight-forward from the IP!

You'd have to look up the quantities! I hope you didn't mind my taking liberties with you IP phrase, but it was nice to play around with the idea, after a few 'off the grid' stories swam around but didn't get concrete! Rhiannon

Thank you, Luigi, but they are not tough!!

I think I once heard somone refer to them as 'stone biscuits' as if they were like stone, but the stone refers to how they are cooked, on the bakestone, like pancakes, or on thick-bottomed frying pan. Their consistency is like scones I would say. Rhiannon

Like Luigi, I think you're well clever coming up with off griddle :0) I looked up the recipe - they do seem quite uncomplicated and with no tricky ingredients - just the sort of recipe to know incase invaded by teenagers

Thanks, Di. Yes, I think they are the sort of little cakes that if you get in to the habit of making them, they are quite quick and easy, and always nicest when freshly made! Rhiannon
