The scrubland stretched behind the mill, bordered by the river and the steep incline of the millstone grit. Long grasses grew atop mounds of dirt, brick and glass. Brambles criss-crossed the field, beneath which the remains of machines and tools decayed into their composite parts, leaving rusted bolts and wheels, and the rotten wood that once held them.
By the river, the balsam grew thick. She swished the plants apart and followed the sound of the water. The bank was high when she reached the edge.
