An Author in Search of Six Characters

Since the time I began, till now,
I’ve struggled to figure out how
To develop the cast of my plot,
Without having to shoot the lot.

There are six characters in all
But they don’t want to play ball.
The Son won’t allow me to say
That he and his sibling are gay.

The Daughter declares to detest
My intention to write of incest.
The Mother complains it’s unfair
When I want to reveal her affair.

The Father becomes very wild
At the mention of a secret child.
His Lover doesn’t wish to confess
That she’s under enormous stress.

I am locked in a firm stranglehold
By her Husband, who’s a cuckold,
If I describe that he knew all along;
He’ll protest that I got it all wrong.

Each character proves to be awkward
And I’m unable now to go forward.
I’ll have to heed my original hunch:
Kill them off and get rid of this bunch.
