the in-between places

Little left behind; little to lose
I set off at dawn
to the in-between places.
I peeled away film layers of still waters
chose paths where time was absent
half worn by lost souls; or the found
I sat where birds sang loudest
stepped outside myself, made room
for silence to hide
I kicked off the moss
which had thickened thought to sleep
moulding me to the very order of thing.
And what I had forgotten, yet always knew,
broke rank, pierced through
this once table-top surface
sliding down from a morning star.
