Hodge Podge

Bags of memory lay
across her back
as she stared fascinated
at the weedy exit
from a farm that used to be.
It was 63 years
ago when Esther left
the land and set out for
a new life – away
from the cows and the
hay and harnessing
the land – wild game
and chickens and
pigs and babies with
brothers and sisters sharing
space – all too long ago.
The advance of winter
broken bones from trees
too tall and potions
to stave off chills – all
part of the past.
Tears and a smile
recall the joy
& tough times – still
important memories
in this older lady
who never forgot her youth
now back to share with
those who stayed behind-
they remember too.

Capture the past so concisely
Capture the past so concisely. Is there any old acquaintances or family still there to meet again? Rhiannon

I liked this one
I was put in mind of those half abandoned semi-derelict farms in the west of Ireland (before they went upmarket)
