Dear diary I feel so small today, like Alice down the rabbit hole inhaling atmosphere, seizing handfuls of earth as I shrink, where ant mounds are the size of tall Grand Canyon Peaks...I wonder if JRR Tolkien felt this way when down in the trenches of war! But I suppose in the large scheme of things we are all like ants going about our business, with our own obstacles to climb out of.

 

Looking back, you and I Gina were never really of this world, more aware of invisible creatures laughing at us on boughs, as shimmering canopy hid wandering mischief, even the sort we got up to.

 

I remember profound magic transpiring on that warm evening, two giggling teenagers just chilling on boundary wall, with woods behind and a quiet country lane before us, you with your lager and black, I preferred lager and lime.

 

Our imaginations would weave those hidden images of rustling sounds from undergrowth into a fairy realm, as we watched the dancing leaves develop wings, those green fragments of ancient trees stirring, while lengthy blades of grass like sweeping hair decorated with wild daisies and buttercups quivered, embracing movement...thriving on pure energy, as we traced our creative powers of curiosity, laughing at what we might find, a magnetic intrigue into an unconventional adventure, pulled from passages from another reality in time.

 

They say a leopard never changes its spots, I hope you held onto the enchantment, as I scour my memory. My wish is that you preserved that day in a bottle to open at leisure, as I revisit words of time spent with you.

What a beautiful memory!

I am so sorry if you are feeling small today. Your ability to express your thoughts is as great as ever, as is the wisdom learned from your experiences  "we are all like ants going about our business, with our own obstacles to climb out of" is GREAT

I liked also the descriptions of the grass, you give it a personality :0)

Even though this is such a short diary entry it does have a magical feel, suggesting other worlds in time and size and fairy, and all full of warmth

Hello Di, Glad you enjoyed reading. Making memories when you're young is what it's all about.

I think as we get older and not as fit as we once were it's easy to feel small, especially when you feel like you're not in control...but like those ants i will work through my anxieties.

I watched the movie on Tolkien's life story just the other day, very good, definitely recommended. I have also read all the books i.e. on the ring and the hobbits and that, excellent reading as well as watched all those movies.

Like most people I know the story of Alice, but not the second, Alice and the mirror etc. I haven't read, I wonder how good it is no-one seems to have actually read it.

I've also been keeping a journal for some time but I have to admit it is rather mundane but it helps you know and sometimes a lot. Your diary sounds much more interesting.

Hi Nolan,

I too have read all the books, from the Hobbit to the Lord Of The Rings, also seen the film on Tolkiens life, how he based the books on his time in the trenches. Of course most people know the story of Alice falling down the rabbit hole.

Thank goodness throughout my life I pushed myself into doing many things and didn't stop to think too much, otherwise I'd never have had many memories. Sometimes it's hard to make such a situation sound interesting, but with this diary entry the words flowed, though not all straight away, it took a while, but I was pleased at how it turned out.

how kind of you to stop by and read. That's such a nice comment, and yes you're so right about some memories being special...I'm sure you too have many. 

Me and my friend at the time used to thrive on our imaginations and shared the same interests which was such a bonus, sometimes we'd just look at each other and knew what the other was thinking, it was like we were psychic and in tune.I never did find out what happened to her when moving on to pastures new, though we probably went in different directions and if we met now it wouldn't be the same, best to leave in the past.

Anyway enough of my ramblings. I'm glad you enjoyed and thank you for letting me know.

Wow, a rare piece of Jenny prose. I'm assuming autobiographical, but you never really know. I have a habit of reflecting and romaticizing times and people gone by as well. I liked your literary references too. Great writing.

Hi there GGHades502,

yes this is autobiographical, it was one warm evening back in the early 1970s when I was a teenager and away with the fairiessmiley...still am to this day. wink Just wish I could get out and do some digging in the garden, get some veg and flower seeds sown, that would be really cool, but sadly my back and legs just won't take it anymore.

Hi Jean, it's so lovely to hear from you again, it's been a long time.  The bit about the trees and also the grass took a while to put together, but I was pleased with the outcome in the end.

I managed to get up onto the ridgeway yesterday for the first time in nearly a year, though I'm using a walking stick now. You should have seen the amount of people up there, it was busier than town, gone was the peace and quiet of just the breeze and clouds, oh and bird song, but it was a nice cool, clear day and I did feel better for the walk.

Hi Rachel,

glad you caught the magic in this poem, magic has always been one of my passions. At the time my friend lived in a caravan down at Severn beach.

I can't remember the name of the pub being so long ago, but it was down a lane with this wall we'd sit on and gaze into the woods laughing at every movement and inventing situations...like what if this or that should happen, was that a moth or a fairy seen flitting through the thicket? All good fun.
