Listening to the News 2/3/22

Does sound of our clapping drown out
the bombs exploding in your homes?
Our politicians stand shoulder
to shoulder with ambassadors
come to beg for help, receiving
words of Solidarity, bright
in Democracy's safest seats
and promises breaking as walls
break in your land, hoping courage
rubs off. Our hands, white feathers, hide
mouths whispering "We will not fight"
or eagerly sign cheques for schools
if anyone is left to learn
there is no honour, in the West

Excellent words Di. I read
Excellent words Di. I read your poem more than a couple of times to take it all in. I feel your frustration. It matches my own.
As innocent people and brainwashed young troops die in their thousands and the rest of us live in fear for the future I wonder what's the point of waving a flag, electing a defence minister, paying for a nuclear deterrent, listening to the news, praying for divine intervention, having an army or even wearing a poppy and promising to remember 'them' each November. How many more poor lost souls must we remember before this all stops? On every side there are men and women with pockets full of blood stained money controlling our lives ... everybody's lives, or deaths ... and there is nothing we can do about it. The frustration and heartbreak are too much to describe accurately with words so I let them churn over and over in my head, sucking the joy out of everything I do. And I am one of the lucky people in the world.

We've been taking some stuff
We've been taking some stuff to a collection centre in a nearby town. They are sending trucks to Ukraine's borders. We've also given a few quid to a Geordie bloke who lives here and drives his truck to their border with Poland. He takes as much as he can fit in but while he's there he buys more essential supplies to hand over. Our contribution seems like nothing in the grand scale of things but what else can we do other than remain cheerful? We keep the bread knife by our bed, just in case!

Sad and irritating is the
Sad and irritating is the 'Blah Blah Blah of the politician and the goodwill ambassodor. It's a shame saying the right thing doesn't always mean doing the right thing.
This was a great take on a such a tragic subject, Di.
