in extremis

and always diving deeper,
there came a morning
when the light splintered on the
diamond shapes of the day
and knowing it was beautiful
but using ever deeper – in an
instant,
I gazed on a bed of gravel
down within my soul
(stilled in the silence
of that car park,
where each machine spoke of significance
and prowess)
shocked to find this limit
where no pearls are hidden, no
green slime smoothes each stone;
having ever fought to stay head
down, feet kicking above,
I looked around and there above me
crescent water shapes of light
ribbon eels of sun
quietly and deep inside,
I put the world on hold
and felt the body of the spirit
kick out to right itself
and then hang limp
to rise
