I’m thinking of writing, later today,

after faffing about in the usual way.

I’ll boil the kettle, make some tea,

listen to Kraftwerk, for an hour or three.

 

At lunch, I’ll probably walk the dog,

then read a pulp novel - while sat on the bog.

I’ll line up my pencils according to size,

and do some burpees, they’re good for the thighs.

 

I’ll do wordle in five - or possibly six -

research 2nd string pitchers from the New York Knicks.

I’ll read the last 100 pages of a "masterwork",

then delete the majority, as the work of a berk.

 

I’ll translate rock lyrics into broken Walloon,

correct my spellings of phases of the moon.

When all of that’s done, and out of the way,

I’ll think about writing, later today.

Made me laugh, thank you. This really will strike a chord with almost everyone. Do you remember a sketch years ago, I think it was Rowan Atkinson as a school student sitting down to take an exam, arranging his lucky gonks, his pencil case, various other things - by the time he was ready to start, the invigilator said 'time's up'

ps - I managed wordle in 3 today!

would not have guessed you were a professional crastinator :0) You have just made it so much harder for programmers trying to create more authentic seeming AI writing - how to explain broken Walloon to an algorithm?

watching Fireball XL5 enthused me about spaceships and science. From age 10 (John Christopher's books) to 23 or so I read swathes of Golden and Silver Age science fiction. I joined the computer club at school. I began to read about advances in Physics, Quantum and otherwise. I tied myself in knots trying to understand string theory. I was certain science was the answer to everything.

 Now, whilst I think science is -on balance- a good thing, I just don't think we should do things simply because they are possible. If that means abandoning a quest for scientific truth, I'm happy if Dr Strangelove just says, "I am ninety nine per cent sure ve can do zis, but ve von't because zair may be consekvences".

Besides, the certitude of youth is a distant (embarrassing) memory for me now: I am much happier with ineffability and the numinous. Who'd a thunk it?

The flip-side is that when either there is no inspiration for writing or no clear ability to put a useful thought into clear presentation, it can be best to find something useful to do (even 'Wordle' or 'Waffle' can be useful to brain stimulation!), and try again fresh later? Rhiannon

This is great! It made me laugh.

I've got the bare bones of something on the same subject but I'll put it on the shelf for a few months so's people don't think I'm a big old copy cat. It's also a good excuse to get out of trying to finish it.

My only criticism is that three hours is nowhere near long enough for listening to Kraftwerk.

And just how bad is doggerel? I'd never heard of it until I joined the ABC squad. I think I'm probably guilty of it in all of my poetry.
