How Could I Be So Stupid

Dear diary...just had to write this reminder to myself to not be foolish again.

 
It all started on Friday 12th April 2024. Me and my partner began our usual journey to Sainsbury's for the weekly shop. Thankfully the weather was clear and sunny.
 
Everything was going well as me and Steve walked the isles which normally takes us about an hour. Eventually we loaded the contents of our trolleys onto the belt, then did the usual act of putting food into bags and back into trolleys.
 
Finally outside we pushed our trolleys to the car and loaded up the boot. Feeling tired but thankful that was it for another week. We shut the car doors and put our seatbelts on. My partner went to start up, turned the ignition. Oh No! There was no life, zilch, absolutely nothing. This is something I've always dreaded...the battery had lost its energy.
 
Steve then turned to me and said: "can you get out and try and push?"
 
"What! Me push on my own? You must be kidding." I replied.
 
So then Steve gets out and goes over to the car dealer shop which is in the car park. The guy in there was more than willing to help us out. So with steve in the driving seat steering, this guy starts to push.
 
Of course I felt awful for the poor man, so decided to help him. Off we went pushing the car around the car park, till finally with some stamina the engine started.
 
But I never realized how quickly the car would speed off, and was pushing with every bit of energy I could muster. While the guy that was pushing stopped still, I couldn't stop running, as my legs couldn't handle the speed, and I ended up falling flat on my front and scraping along the ground.
 
Covered in grazes, with every part of my body in pain, it happened so quickly and I couldn't move. By now people were circled around me. It was so embarrassing as I lay there in tears of pain and feeling so sorry for myself. One guy from the shop came running over and suggested phoning for an ambulance as I was shaking and in shock, but I said definitely no.
 
After some time and feeling humiliated, it took three men to lift me up to standing...even more embarrassment. All I wanted was to get back in the car and go home.
 
They say you live and learn by your mistakes, well I will never attempt to push a car again.
 
Here I am over a week later, still nursing my bruises and a bruised ego.

Oh no Jenny! What a horrible thing to happen! I hope you heal soon, and it wasn't your fault at all - what a shock it must have been!

Thank you for your kind words insert. I'm just glad nobody decided to film me with their phone camara. You can never tell these days.

I just wanted to remind myself to think before I act.

Thanks Di,

I'm still in a lot of pain with my right knee and a couple of other places, but it could have been a lot worse, especially at my age.

I do appreciate your thoughts.

Oh Jenny, that sounds awful. I know from falling off my bike that the embarrassment can be almost as bad as the pain. I really hope you're fit and well and all patched up soon.

Hi Turlough, Sorry about your accident with the bike. My partner went head first over the handlebars of his bike riding down a hill, he ended up with his arm in a sling for a couple of weeks and couldn't drive. 

I'm slowly on the mend, although it didn't do my walking much good, as I had a bad right hip and knee to start with, now I'm walking with a limp...it's the old age arthritus problem setting in, but I'll cope I always do. winkThank you for your concern.

It was bike accidents Jenny. Definitely plural. Elbows, knees and ribs were the major victims. How could I have been so stupid so many times over so many years?

I'm pleased to hear you're on the mend, and I empathise and sympathise with your partner.

To be fair, Jenny, that will have happened to a lot of people. When a car gets bump started, it can shoot off and many end up falling flat on their face. I hope you have recovered from your ordeal. The embarrassment at being the centre of attention and surrounded by onlookers can be as painful as the cuts and bruises, I imagine.

Hi Paul,

to be honest I have never bump started a car before and had no idea what would happen, just thought the engine would start and that would be it...how wrong I was. But we live and learn and at my age, it won't happen again.

Thank you for your kind words Paul. I'm not sure that at seventy my body can take much more of a battering. From now on I'll definitely stick to being in control. wink
