On top of the world again!

(Hergest Ridge, west of Kington, Offa’s Dyke Path, 23/5/24)
Cold and overcast, but
clear
– blustery, blasting
freshening wind.
Such wide views;
east to the Malverns,
south to Hay Bluff
(can I see it? getting cloudy there)
and northward humps and dips of mid-Wales
– a bit of light catches the new bright-greening fern fronds
emerging, some still very curly,
Along to the incongruous
plantation of nine monkey puzzle trees,
on the bare hillisde, and back, refreshed..

thank you. Glad you enjoyed. The light catching the young fresh-green ferns was quite startling. We don't get on long walks at the moment, but it's so good to enjoy such scenes. I get a bit tangled working out which direction we are looking as the paths curve around. Maybe I ought to get myself a compass! Rhiannon

Such breathtaking poetry you've written here Rhiannon. It must be so unusual to see monkey puzzle trees in such an amazing landscape, I've only ever seen them in gardens. You've done the photos proud.

Thank you, Jenny. The monkey puzzle trees are certainly a bit of a puzzle on that rural hilltop. From what I can gather someone thought they grew well in Chile and they ought to grow there, and planted them! Well, they have and have thrived and are a local landmark. I always think their lower branches (so sharp are the 'leaves') look like octopus' limbs to go walking off! Rhiannon

Nine monkey puzzle trees must be quite a sight to see, as must be the views from the ridge that your words describe so well.

thank you. they are something to aim for. I once wrote about the fact that there used to be a racecourse near there, rather high up, and the monkey puzzle trees looked as if they were about to go limbering down on their lower limbs/branches to join it! Rhiannon

Yes we have amazing nature but mostly you have to drive quite far. And yes, it is Africa. See you!
