I have always said I wasn't born rich, but at least I'm not ugly. No
one in my family is ugly, even the redheads who have all the health
problems. We're not the Kennedys but we hold our own.
We're not stupid, either. My nephew gave me a cookbook one Christmas
about white trash cooking, and all I could think was, "There but for
the grace of God go I." I may serve up grits but I know the difference.
Also I don't believe in God. God is the man in the White House and he
only last four years, possibly eight. After that you get a new one,
thank God.
My life changed when those kids came, that much is true. I'm still
trying to decide if it was for the better. You can't live in the past,
I guess, though sometimes I want those easy mornings and quiet nights
back. Three kids of my own, one in the grave, and suddenly I had three
more. Bad things happen in threes, they say. I feel guilty when I say
it myself.
