FOUR A.M. IN THE MORNING,
SHADOWS DANCE ON BROKEN PAVEMENTS
WORLD SLEEPING;
EVEN THE MOON IS YAWNING
STARING OUT AS TIME DOETH CREEP
IN UNISON WITH STOLEN DREAMS;
‘SLEEP-SLEEP’
YET STILL THE NIGHT BRINGS NO RETREAT
KEEPING ME FROM SLUMBER DEAR
MIND CAPTIVE WON’T SET ME FREE,
‘PLEASE, PLEASE’
THESE UNSUNG WORDS CRY; ‘LET ME BE’
SAIL ME INTO DISTANT DREAMS
AN INNER SANCITY OF PEACE
‘SLEEP-SLEEP’
THIS DARKENED PLACE BRINGS NO RETREAT
AND STILL, THE NIGHT IS MOCKING ME,
SO NEAR YET FAR IN RESTLESS STATE,
‘SLEEP-SLEEP’
SHE HEARS ME NOT; MY SILENT PLEA.
ANOTHER RESTLESS SOLITUDE,
AS SLUMBER KEEPS ME FROM HER BREAST
‘NO SLEEP; NO SLEEP’
THIS WAKEFUL STATE LENDS ME NO REST.
SO I MUST WAIT FROM LONE DOMAIN,
FOR MAGIC CHARMS’ DESCENT ON ME;
‘SLEEP-SLEEP’
I’M TIRED OF CALLING SLUMBERS NAME.
