The Runaway Heart (Redrafted)

Tonight I was awoken by a funny sort of feeling
and, opening my eyes, I saw my heart high overhead.
Like a helium balloon, it bobbed about upon the ceiling
and it startled me so much, I almost fell right out of bed.
Afraid that it might float away, I tried hard to retrieve it
but, though I stood upon a chair, my arms were just too short.
I even tried to catch it in a net, would you believe it,
but no matter how I tried, my wayward heart could not be caught.
Then, suddenly, just like some winged creature of the air,
or like a feather fluttering about upon the breeze,
it started whirling, twirling, dancing, darting here and there
and, no matter how I pleaded with it, it did as it pleased.
And then, to my dismay, it flew into another room
and, spying an open window there, shot out into the night
then, over trees and rooftops, like a rocket ship, it zoomed,
so, rushing from my house, I tried to follow its wild flight.
Through streets and alleyways, I followed it, a mile or more
while it soared through the moonlit skies above
until, at last, it came to rest, gently outside your door.
“Of course!”, I thought, “My heart has gone
to the one that it most loves”.
