He lights up a cigarette and tells me everything is going to be ok and he has it under control.
“You promise?” I asked, holding him closer to me as if it was the last time. He reciprocated with a small kiss to my temple. My body melted into him, as if I was becoming a part of him. Something screamed within me, almost deafening. LIAR! LIAR! But I trusted him, wholeheartedly, like he was a cult leader preaching to his followers. I followed him blindly into the darkness, even to the bitter end.
I shook my head at the thought of it, “What’s wrong?” he asked while taking a drag from his cigarette.
“Nothing, it’s fine.” I replied, loosening my grip on his chest.
“I told you I have everything under control.” He repeated.
Liar, liar. The voice in my head got stronger again. The smell of the nicotine was making me nasueous.
“You promise?” I repeated myself.
“I promise, sweetheart, just go to sleep. Okay? Did you take your meds?”
“Yes, I did. I took them about an hour ago.”
