In A-Level history
we learned about Mussolini
the failed journalist who was
so short he demanded to be
photographed from the ground up
Italy, we learned
was barely a country and
had never had a stable government
It had fought unsuccessfully on both sides
in World War One
Il Duce had embarked on a comically misguided
attempt to drain some marshes
and we learned about how his imperialist army
nearly lost to the Abyssinians
who were mostly fighting with spears
And even though we knew how it ended
it was still quite funny
because we’d learned that Fascists were stupid
and weak, and only weak, stupid people voted for them
For us, there was nothing to worry about

Exactly so. I can't remember
Exactly so. I can't remember who said that what we learn from history is that we never learn from history, but they were right.
